Regional event series

Running since 2014 and continuing into 2016, CEDA is running a 10-part series in WA with events held throughout the state's regions. CEDA also continues its annual conference in the Hunter Valley region of NSW.

WA State of the Regions series

The West Australian State of the Regions series was conducted throughout the regions of WA in 2014-16.

Western Australia covers one third of the Australian continent, and is comparable in size to mainland Europe. Given the state's vast expanse, the challenges and opportunities facing each of the nine regions in WA varies immensely.

While mining is a dominant industry for many regions, agriculture and tourism are vital sources of income for others. However, some common concerns for all regions include the provision of water, energy, education, health, transport, housing and Indigenous welfare.

The State Government's Royalties for Regions program was implemented to build capacity and improve services in regional areas.
This scheme invests $5 billion into regional WA from 2008-09 to 2014-15.

  • Is this investment achieving its desired goals?
  • What future developments and projects are being planned?
  • What will the regions look like in 20 years?

This 10-part series began in August 2014 and concluded in mid 2016.

Regional development in Western Australia

Following the conclusion of the series, CEDA released Regional Development in Western Australia, a publication which presents the culmination of the State of the Regions event series, providing key insights from the series along with overarching actions to help ensure Western Australia’s Regions continue to thrive and prosper. This report also includes case studies of businesses in each region that are adapting to change and capitalising on comparative advantages in WA.

Newcastle and Hunter Region Economic Development Forum

CEDA is committed to raising the debate and discussion regarding the future challenges of Australia's economic development in the 21st century and its impact on regional hubs.

The Hunter region of NSW is one of Australia's most populated regions with a strong sense of identity and an important contributor to NSW's and Australia's economy.

Each year CEDA visits the Hunter region to convene leaders in government, key industries, universities and corporations from the manufacturing, mining, information technology, agri-business, and major utility sectors.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
