Ian Satchwell
Interim Director - International Mining Development Centre
Ian Satchwell is Interim Director of the new International
Mining for Development Centre, a joint venture between University
of Western Australia, University of Queensland and the Australian
Government, though AusAID. The Centre provides practical advisory,
education and training services to developing nations, including
Indonesia, across mining-related issues. It is part of a $125
million development assistance initiative to assist developing
countries to develop sustainable mining and petroleum industries.
As such, it represents a welcome further shift of Australia's aid
program towards economic development.
Ian also has 25 years of experience in industry and development
policy at state, national and international levels, operating at
the business-government-community interface. For the past 10 years,
he has held management roles in national economics consultancy
firms, advising industry and government on a broad range of issues.
Previously, Ian was a manager within four different minerals and
energy industry bodies. He has held board-level positions in three
other business associations. In these roles, Ian has been closely
involved in policy development and strategy design, with particular
emphasis on investment, infrastructure and regional
development.
Ian has work experience in all Australian States and Territories
and in several countries in Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia,
Vietnam and Brunei. In 2011, he undertook a six month assignment in
Indonesia, advising the Government of Indonesia on trade and
investment policies and regulations. He is National President of
the Australia Indonesia Business Council.
