NSW still backs putting a price on carbon
Australian Financial
Review, 24/03/2010, 7
Extract: NSW Energy Minister John Robertson
yesterday told a Committee for Economic Development of Australia
lunch that 'we need a price on carbon to make gas competitive,' and
supported the Federal Government's carbon pollution reduction
scheme. Companies such as Origin Energy have promoted the expanded
use of gas, and the Australian Energy Market Operator has states
that NSW may need additional energy capacity by 2015-16. Mr
Robertson also said that the government remains committed to the
privatisation of the electricity sector, including Macquarie
Generation, EnergyAustralia, Delta Electricity and Eraring Energy,
after recent comments from JPMorgan which described the
privatisation process as 'off again. on again.' There are concerns
about the government's relationship with the private sector after
the cancellation of the CBD metro project and plans to privatise
Sydney Ferries.

Australian Financial
Review, 18/03/2010, 63
Extract: The most informed assessment of the
NBN rollout now is that it is foolhardy and not needed. It is also
being seen as irresponsibly smashing the capital base of Telstra.
Most in Melbourne know that with cable down nearly every street,
due to Telstra and Optus, we can obtain very fast broadband via
Foxtail using data over cable service interface specification 3.0.
The emerging 4G mobile standard also means wireless broadband
options will be competitive and fast (Michael Porter is the
national director, research and policy, of the Committee for
Economic Development of Australia).
