EVENT OVERVIEW
Governments at all levels are now beginning to appreciate the
demographic change that lies ahead when the generation born in the
immediate post-war era pushed beyond working age and into what we
now call retirement. The long awaited IGR 3 released in February of
this year provided an update of the policy challenges and
opportunities ahead for Australia.
Key themes that are explored within the 2010 Intergenerational
Report include Australia's ageing population, long term population
trends, the threat of climate change, sustainable economic growth,
labour force participation, health and wellbeing, supporting
renewable technologies and infrastructure. This all comes down to
the challenge posed by an increase in population growth where
demand for rising health costs and government services will be a
key factor. Governments also need to ensure that services and
infrastructure are in place in preparation for the perceived
population boom.
Australia's ability to meet these challenges depends on the
actions taken today. Failure to respond today to tackle
intergenerational demand and challenges will result in severe
economic, social and environmental consequences.
CEDA's forum will explore key challenges and discuss whether the
Government's fiscal sustainability has improved since the second
and first intergenerational reports. Furthermore, our panel of
experts will analyse IGR 3's findings and recommendations to ensure
policies provides a solid foundation to assist in balancing the
needs of current and future generations.
