FAQs for Queensland Copland Program
FAQs for Queensland Copland Program
Are there selection criteria for
admittance into the program?
Yes. Applicants need to submit their CV and a letter of
endorsement from their employer together with the application form
and payment. In order to ensure that all candidates receive
the maximum advantage from participation in the program, all
candidates must have at least 5-7 years of management
experience. A degree is not necessary, although it may play a
role if the program is oversubscribed. UQ and CEDA will
evaluate each application to ensure a well balanced cross-section
of business is maintained.
What are the maximum numbers for the
program?
While there are no pre-set maximum numbers, best practice
training protocol suggests that no more than 25 and ideally around
15 ensures that all attendees receive the close attention that they
expect from such a senior management program. For 2010, our
target is 15-18 registrations. Attendees may be working in
syndicate groups of four or five depending upon final numbers.
Is there a limit on the number of
applications that one business can make?
No. However, if you are looking to make multiple registrations,
we would ask that you contact us and discuss this first as we may
be able to work with you to customise a concurrent program for your
business. Part of the success of the Copland program is the
benefit gained by delegates through networking with a wide cross
section of industry and business in the cohort.
What is the age of most candidates?
Whilst there is no age limit on anyone attending the Copland
program, the vast majority are people in middle management and this
usually means that they are between 25 - 35 years of age.
This creates a cohort of contemporaries who develop close
networking contacts and who are dealing with the same issues from a
similar demographic perspective. Naturally the program is
open to everyone in management.
How long is the program?
10 modules. Starting 1 April and concluding 4 November
2010. Held on the first Thursday of every month from 12 noon
to 4.00pm. Modules 1&2 (1 April) and Modules 5&6 (1
July) are being held as full day events - all others are half
days. A graduation dinner will be held in late November or
early December. Only one program per year is conducted.
Where is the program held?
Located on the 19th floor of Central Plaza One,
UQ Business School Downtown is an ideal venue to deliver the
planned senior professional development workshops. In
addition to seminar rooms and boardroom, lecture theatres and
spectacular 360-degree views of the Brisbane skyline, the facility
features extensive data access, private workstations, access to
computers, lockers, kitchen facilities and extensive audiovisual
capabilities. With state-of-the-art amenities, UQ Business School
Downtown is a premier location in the heart of the Brisbane
CBD.

UQ Business School Downtown map.
What is the cost of the program?
For 2010, the cost is $3,500 (+GST). Total $3,850 (inc GST)
which includes attendance at the 10 modules, all notes, handouts,
working lunch, morning and afternoon teas (as applicable) for the
duration of the program. This does not include the Graduation
Dinner.
Is there a discount for multiple
registrations from the one business?
No. The program is already very keenly and competitively priced
to ensure that CEDA delivers a significant value-add for its
members.
If I submit an application form and I am
not accepted, will my payment be refunded?
Yes - in full.
Can I re-apply the following
year?
Yes, in fact we would encourage this.
If I submit an application but then
have to withdraw, am I entitled to any refund?
Yes. However if you withdraw from the program after your
application has been received, then the following cancellation
policy applies:
- longer than 1 month from start date - 90% refund
- 3 weeks before start date - 75% refund
- 2 weeks before start date - 50% refund
- 1 week before start date - 25% refund
- after program has commenced - no refund and no credit
transfer
When do applications close?
Applications close 25 March
2010 and can be posted to: CEDA GPO Box 2900
Brisbane 4000; or faxed to 07 3229 8166; or emailed to Cate
Allen-Ducat.
Is there module pre-work or homework
between modules?
Yes. It is anticipated that most modules (but not all)
will have mandatory pre-readings and or research background to be
undertaken in order for the students to actively contribute at the
level expected. We are mindful of not cutting into work time
too much so it is not anticipated that there will be much by way of
homework assignments.
Will there be assessments?
Yes, as set by UQ - but then, you'd expect this from a robust,
senior management development program. Remember however, that to
qualify for the UQ RPL you must:
- attend and actively participate in all modules including any
pre-reading required; and
- do a 30 minute presentation at the end of the course as a
group/team addressing the application of the program to
contemporary work related issues; and
- individually submit one written assignment (2,000 words)
addressing how the modules / program will enhance your specific
work related role. This assignment is required to be
submitted two weeks after the final module (Friday 19 November
2010). This will be assessed by UQ within two weeks from
being submitted and students will be informed of their results soon
thereafter.
A graduation dinner will be held in the first week of
December.
What recognition do I receive for
completing the Copland program?
First: Providing you meet a satisfactory level
of participation and engagement in the program you will be
presented with the Copland Certificate endorsed by CEDA and
UQ. This is a prestigious recognition of your participation
in and satisfactory completion of one of Australia's elite
management development programs for emerging leaders. You
also become part of the national Copland alumni.
Second: UQ are awarding two university
credits for RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) articulation into the
Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership, providing students
satisfactorily meet the required criteria. To be awarded credit for
the 2 units a CEDA Copland participant needs to:
- Attend and actively participate in 90% of modules; and
- Complete all 10 module requirements; and
- Complete the assessment attached to the program - that
is:
a presentation to the whole
group
a written piece of work that covers
topics covered by the modules
credit will be awarded to students in
the following ways:
2 units for a
"special topic" code within the Graduate Certificate of Executive
Leadership (GCELead); OR
2 units toward
general credit within a Masters program offered by the UQ Business
School - excluding the Master of Business Administration (MBA)
Is this the only module that I can use
my RPL credits for?
No. Other courses and other universities may recognise the
UQ accreditation. You will need to check with the specific
course and university.
If I miss a module can I do
make-up?
Possibly. You could attend that module next year, or, attend a
similar session in another course if one is running at a later date
at UQ.
What happens if I don't pass the UQ
assessment criteria?
Providing you still meet a satisfactory level of participation
and engagement in the program you will be presented with the
Copland Certificate, but you will not be eligible for the two UQ
credits.
What is the Copland Alumni?
The alumni is the group of individuals who have satisfactorily
completed the Copland program each year. As Queensland's
alumni grows, CEDA will convene special events for the Copland
alumni graduates to take tem to the next level. You will also
be invited back to talk to the new intake of candidates to share
your experiences and to mentor the emerging leaders who are
following in your elite footsteps.

Indicative content - Innovation is a
fundamental source of competitive advantage in business and is
critical to organisations of all sizes and sectors. It changes our

Economy

and values that ensure successful execution of business
strategy.
This module equips participants with the ability to prepare
their organisation for turbulence and to strengthen the link
between strategy and the business model. It allows the development
and implementation of high impact changes to link futures thinking
with strategy as a way of providing clear direction and
purpose.

responsibly in the modern business world. We apply key philosophy
insights and techniques for today's leaders.
Philosophy has everything to do with business, if you know how
to use it! Drawing upon the best of Western and Eastern traditions
to enrich the quality of our thinking, dialogue and action, this

corporate and Government managers.

between national state and local levels of government with
business, working in collaboration with related agencies - taking
into account the crucial role currently being played by public
sector managers in supporting business partnerships and
alliances.
Tell me about the industry
experts?
A unique advantage of the Copland program over other general
management or leadership modules is that the leading academic
experts from UQ are completed at each module by up to two top

experiences. By bringing senior management experiences into
the equation, students have the opportunity to challenge, probe and
gain the benefit of panel discussion between the lecturer and
industry to ensure deliver of the most finely-tuned and relevant
senior management perspectives.
Does my employer have to be member of
CEDA for me to do the program?
No. Naturally, in the event of the program being
oversubscribed, preference will be given to applicants whose
