CEDA continues to advance critical discussion around energy policy through our 2008 Energy Series. Aimed at stimulating debate and facilitating knowledge exchange, the series advances discussions around the development of prudent public policy to ensure a secure energy future in NSW and nationally.

The prospect of a carbon-constrained future and the planned 2010 launch of an emissions trading regime by the Federal Government, makes gas competitive with coal for the first time. Contributing to the debate around the role of natural gas as a future fuel source for NSW, CEDA invites two major energy investors to discuss industry developments and opportunities and to present an outlook for a gas-fired power generation.

Coal-seam gas producer Queensland Gas could potentially step into the NSW power generation sector, with the prospect of building a 600 MW power station in the Hunter Valley. This initiative together with the development of a new gas pipeline stretching from QGC's Queensland acreage to Newcastle would create an interstate gas market, linking the supply in Queensland with increasing demand in NSW.

TRUenergy has committed to long-term carbon reduction targets and is transitioning from a traditional utility into a leading, low-emissions energy services provider. It is currently constructing a new, state-of-the-art, gas-fired power station near Wollongong, in NSW. When built, the TRUenergy Tallawarra power station will produce 70 percent less greenhouse gas emissions than traditional coal-fired power stations, making it Australia's most efficient gas-fired power station.
