Event overview

Are we making the most of older Australians in the workplace? And are we creating workplace pathways for younger Australia as they enter their careers? Answers to these questions will determine Australia’s future workplace productivity, shape social cohesion and lift economic empowerment.

Australian youth and older generations are under-represented in today’s diverse workforce. Australia’s unemployment rate among people aged 15 to 24 years is more than double the general rate and is higher than the average comparable economies within the OECD. Older Australians face discrimination in reduced access to employment, a lack of access to appropriate training and professional development, and also a general undervaluing of their knowledge and experience.  

Bringing together stakeholders from employment, education and skills providers, advocates for Australians young and ageing, this event will examine:

  • the economic and social benefits of a diverse and engaged workforce that offers opportunities to workers – young and old; 
  • policy initiatives that encourage older adults to remain in the workplace and access life-long learning opportunities to upskill; 
  • work opportunities for younger Australians and vocational pathways for school leavers; and 
  • inclusive leadership and eliminating bias in the workplace with regard to perceptions of age. 

Meet the speakers

Yasmin King
Chief Executive Officer, SkillsIQ

Yasmin is CEO of SkillsIQ, a Skills Service Organisation which develops national vocational standards on behalf of 18 ‘people-facing’ Industry Reference Committees which represent the skills needs of around 50% of the Australian workforce. She has undertaken international consulting work for the governments of Peru, Vietnam and Thailand, and APEC Human Resources Committee. An experienced negotiator and mediator, she is adjunct to the Australian Graduate School of Management, lecturing in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution.

Jan Owen AM
Chief Executive Officer, Foundation for Young Australians

Author of The Future Chasers, Jan Owen is dedicated to Australian social enterprise, innovation and to maximising opportunity for young people. With the Foundation for Young Australians she has led global analysis of future jobs, skills and education.

Frank Ribuot
Chief Executive Officer ANZ, South East Asia, India, Randstad

Frank has over 25 years of experience in operations, general management and human resources consulting, predominantly in the Asia Pacific region having lived in China, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Singapore and having extensively travelled throughout the rest of the region. In his current role at Randstad he is focused on strengthening the company’s performance, productivity, agility and innovation, through strong business management, investing in people, and he has a passion for superior sales and technology strategies. Randstad is a Fortune Global 500 company and the world's leading recruitment & HR solutions specialists, headquartered in The Netherlands.

Prof. Lucy Taksa
Co-Director, Centre for Workforce Futures, Macquarie University

Professor Lucy Taksa was appointed co-Director of the Centre for Workforce Futures in July 2018 after 4 years as as Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Business and Economics at Macquarie University. She has been a Non-Executive Board Member of Settlement Services International Ltd (SSI), a leading not-for-profit organisation in NSW, since 2015. She has been Head of the School of Organisation and Management at UNSW and of the Department of Marketing and Management at Macquarie University.

Ian Yates AM
Chief Executive, Council of the Ageing Australia (COTA)

Ian Yates is Chief Executive of COTA Australia, the national peak body for COTAs (Councils on the Ageing) in each State and Territory of Australia. Ian was appointed CE of COTA SA in June 1989 and has played national leadership roles in COTA since 2002. COTAs are the peak aged consumer organisation in each state and territory and nationally, with thousands of organisational members representing over 500,000 seniors, plus 30,000 individual members. Ian serves on a wide variety of federal government and aged care sector national bodies.
