In Australia, and particularly NSW, women's representation in the public and Third sector exceeds that of other developed countries including USA, Belgium and Germany. However, the pace of change is slow at senior executive and leadership levels.

The Third sector includes professional membership benefit organisations, charities, professional industry associations and peak bodies.

In July, the Federal Government announced its commitment to fair support of the community sector. Beyond achieving a fair outcome for equal pay, how can concerted and diverse professional development of women working in the Third sector be ensured? This sector contributes at least 4.7% to Australia's GDP, making it  one of our largest 'industries'.

The NSW Government's employment and development strategy - Making the public sector work better for women - seeks to improve women's recruitment, development and retention. Benchmarks by 2012 include maintaining women's representation at a minimum of 60% and increasing women's representation in senior positions from 28% to 35%.

In this third session  - Is Government and Third sector leading the pack? - we will be examining what current programs and new initiatives will achieve outlined targets and better representation of women in leadership positions. Are these initiatives mutually exclusive to the public and third sector or can they be employed within the ASX 200?
