EVENT OVERVIEW

CEDA is delighted to welcome Mike Hickinbotham, Head of New Media of Telstra and highly respected social media strategist to present as part of the Breakfast on the Run Series.

A research study conducted by the University of Rhode Island shows that brand advocates, people who habitually share information on the products they use are thought leaders and influence purchase decisions of others in their social networks.

So, if social media is perceived as a golden hen, then brand advocates could be the golden eggs marketers seek to get their hands on.

Brand advocates are a different breed of consumer. They can be an organisation's most powerful sales people if you can harness these well informed consumers. More importantly, brand advocates are 75% more likely to share a good experience about a product.

Mike will go beyond the statistics and examine how Australian businesses can identify and build a meaningful relationship with brand advocates.  

Breakfast on the Run provide shorts, sharp and to-the-point gatherings with in depth analysis and opportunities for dynamic exchange with a new network of peers. This series focuses on key aspects of Australia's economic and social development in the 21st century.

MEET THE SPEAKER

Mike Hickinbotham  
Head of New Media 
Telstra

Mike's main priority is to help Telstra build a more meaningful relationship with the socially enabled customer. Mike works in Telstra's Chief Marketing Office in the Brand, Creativity and Strategy team.

In 2008, Mike became Telstra's first employee designated to work in social media. As Telstra's Social Media Senior Advisor he leads the way in developing Telstra's customer support using Twitter, creating Telstra's 3Rs of social media policy, an internal idea generation site, Telstra's Facebook page, and creating and implementing 'Social Reviews'.

Mike is also currently leading the Australian Direct Marketing Association (ADMA) sub-group on social media. The social media sub-group is part of the ADMA Digital Council and is responsible for educating members about social media.

Originally from Toronto, Canada he started his career as a Ministerial Staffer in the Ontario Government. His other qualifications include an MBA from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management and a Master of Professional Communication from the University of Western Sydney.
