Event overview

Australia’s ageing population poses long term significant and structural challenges for our economy.

Concerns about the sustainability of the costs associated with supporting the ageing population, in particular, the age pension is a growing concern both policy makers and business.

The latest Intergenerational Report predicts the number of working age persons for every person over 65 (the dependency ratio) will almost halve over the next 40 years. Policy makers are concerned about fiscal sustainability of the age pension and the long term impacts on Australia’s economy due to falling participation rates and taxation revenue.

Along with the age-pension, superannuation is a key part of Australia’s retirement income system supporting part-pensioners and self-funded retirees. It is a vital part of our financial system: boosting national savings, providing capital for financial markets and infrastructure investment, and guaranteeing a nest egg for millions of Australians.

CEDA’sSuper challenge of retirement income policy research launch event will examine:

  • Future challenges to Australia’s retirement income system;
  • Modelling retirement behaviour to inform the development of retirement income policy;
  • Encouraging Australians to boost savings and maintaining confidence in the superannuation system; and
  • The role of the age pension and superannuation in securing a comfortable retirement for Australia’s ageing population.

Public event advice – Coronavirus

We at CEDA are proud to regularly convene and engage speakers and audiences as an essential element of our efforts to broaden discussion and debate of the most important policy issues facing Australia. In doing so, our first priority is always the safety and wellbeing of our guests and staff.

With that in mind CEDA has suspended all public and trustee events. However CEDA remains true to its purpose of providing platforms to inform and promote debate of critical issues and driving policy solutions and are continuing critical discussions for Australia’s economic, social and environmental development through a digital events program including exclusive livestreams, podcasts and video, as well as our virtual Trustee roundtable discussions.

CEDA will continue to closely monitor government advice regarding public gatherings and act on relevant health advice from the Australian government in relation to COVID-19.
