Guest speaker John Cleland will discuss regional perspectives on Australia’s energy dilemma, commenting on policy priorities to end Australia’s age of uncertainty in energy; industry leadership and collaboration; and priorities for regional NSW in managing Australia energy transition.

Meet the speaker

John Cleland
Chief Executive Officer, Essential Energy

John is an experienced leader with executive commercial experience in large and complex organisations across diverse industry sectors including energy distribution, rail, resources, transportation and logistics, and agribusiness.

Since his appointment as Essential Energy CEO in July 2016, John has initiated a major transformation of the business, with an uplift in strategic and commercial capabilities, technology, processes and performance. As a result, he has overseen measurable improvements in network reliability, costs and customer satisfaction along with award-winning consumer and stakeholder engagement and innovation towards business sustainability.

Recognised for his extensive commercial, operational and people-focused experience in asset intensive, challenging environments, John’s position in the energy debate has recently seen him join the Board of Energy Networks Australia.

John previously held the position of Head of Infrastructure, Coal Division at Anglo American PLC and prior to that he was the CEO of WestNet Infrastructure Group (comprising rail, gas transmission and gas distribution assets and operations in Western Australia).
