Australia's labour productivity has been on a steady decline over the past decade and part of this decline has been attributed to the lack of skilled labour. The response by governments has been to lift net international migration levels to unprecedented levels and to boost training initiatives with a particular focus on apprenticeships for the industrial and building sectors.

However, there are strong economic and social arguments that an alternative source of highly educated labour is available.  A Goldman Sachs JBWere analysis report in 2009 suggested that closing the female-male employment gap could boost Australian GDP by 11 per cent.  It also argues, that this would help address the problem of pension sustainability,  lift savings rates and tax receipts.

South Australia has the highest average age of mainland Australia and is about to experience a period of strong growth from the mining sector. Both are placing significant pressure on our workforce, employment participation and productivity.

Join Federal Employment Participation Minister the Hon Kate Ellis MP and a panel of thought leaders to focus on this critical issue of boosting female employment and some strategies to achieve this.
