OVERVIEW

The Australian economy is at a difficult juncture. Commodity prices remain high and investment in parts of the mining industry is very strong. Yet there has been a palpable further softening in many non-mining sectors in recent months, near-term indicators for the global economy have weakened, and confidence in Australia's economic outlook has fallen sharply among Australian households and businesses. At the same time, inflation has picked up noticeably, even leaving aside the impact of the floods and Cyclone Yasi around the start of the year.

  • How should we understand these developments and what are their implications for domestic economic policy?
  • What has been the Government's approach to addressing the economic challenges facing Australia, and has it been effective?
  • And what should the Federal Government be doing to better manage the Australian economy through this difficult period?

Join CEDA as we welcome Leader of the Opposition, The Hon Tony Abbott MHR, to deliver a keynote address on these critical issues.
