Event overview

In late 2013, Federal Education Minister, Christopher Pyne, announced the Review of the Demand Driven Funding System which since being established in 2012, has seen the number of Commonwealth supported places increase from around 469,000 in 2009 to an estimated 577,000 in 2013.

While still in its early years, the demand driven system has not only uncapped student access to university but has given universities the ability to choose their own profile and restructure course offerings. However, the sector has come under increasing pressure over teaching quality and the impact on future graduates, as well as questions over whether the sector has encouraged innovation, competition and diversity.

Rising degree attainment matters for productivity and businesses in Australia, and highly and appropriately skilled graduates are needed to meet the needs of the changing economy. The university sector itself is coming under increasing pressure to innovate, secure new funding, and increase and retain participation levels as it too undergoes transition.

This CEDA forum will examine what's next for higher education against the backdrop of the Review, and more broadly consider the sector providing:

  • A critique of the Review of the Demand Driven Funding System;
  • A discussion on regional universities including growing and retaining participation;
  • Reflections on the outlook for Australian higher education; and
  • The role of private philanthropy in higher education institutions.
