Event overview

How will the new national innovation strategy position Australia for the fourth industrial revolution? What can we learn from success stories of research translation and commercialisation?

CEDA welcomes Innovation and Science Chair Bill Ferris AC together with some of Australia’s most entrepreneurial leaders to discuss the just-released National Innovation Strategy and the priorities for Australia’s innovation system.

Hear personal stories and reflections on what’s needed to translate Australia’s cutting-edge research into commercial success from BioCurate CEO Dr Glenn Begley, AMD’s Professor Stan Skafidis, Swinburne Innovation Precinct’s Dr Elicia Wong and Director of the Centre for Pattern Recognition and Data Analytics at Deakin University Professor Svetha Vanketesh. We discuss the initiatives that have been successful and how to build on Australia’s strengths in innovation and science.

Opening keynote address

Bill Ferris AC
Chair of Innovation and Science Australia

Bill is the Chair of the Innovation and Science Australia board and is bringing the higher education and business sectors together to drive the commercialisation of breakthrough innovation. Meet the panel

Dr Glenn Begley
Chief Executive Officer, BioCurate

Glenn is a clinical haematologist/oncologist and inaugural CEO of BioCurate, an $80 million venture launched by Monash University and the University of Melbourne. Before joining BioCurate in May 2017, Glenn was Chief Scientific Officer of Akriveia Therapeutics, a California-based biotech company focused on discovering and developing the next generation of cancer immunotherapies.

Professor Stan Skafidas
Managing Director, AMD Australia

Stan led the development of adaptive frequency-hopping technology that now forms a critical part of the Bluetooth standard and has been incorporated in several billion devices. His research in nano-electronics has advanced the disciplines of wireless communications, single chip radars and medical diagnostic systems. His most recent venture Nitero was acquired by technology multinational Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in March 2017.

Professor Svetha Vankatesh
Alfred Deakin Professor and Director, Centre for Pattern Recognition and Data Analytics (PRaDA), Deakin University

Svetha is an ARC Australian Laureate Fellow whose research looks at machine learning, probabilistic graphical models and data mining. Svetha and her team have tackled a wide range of problems of societal significance, including the critical areas of autism, security and aged care. The outcomes have impacted the community and evolved into publications, patents, tools and three award winning start-up companies: Virtual Observer, iCetana, and TOBY Playpad.

Dr Elicia Wong
Director, Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Swinburne Innovation Precinct

Elicia brings 10 years of experience as a tech entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, having been involved in several successful startups. Elicia’s research at Oxford University led to the commercialisation of her novel biosensor and bioreactor technologies. Before joining the Swinburne Innovation Precinct in November 2017, Elicia was Chief Scientific Officer at Sensor Innovations and Chief Technology Officer at Elemental Machines in Silicon Valley.
