EVENT OVERVIEW

According to the Australian Council of Social Service, 12 per cent of Western Australians were living below the commonly recognised poverty line (less than 50 per cent of the median wage) in 2010.

Poverty is costing the WA economy billions of dollars every year by placing pressure on the health and education system as well as law enforcement. Furthermore, the social impact to children growing up in poverty is immeasurable and employment opportunities limited which continues the cycle.

While many WA charities are working to alleviate the impacts of poverty, funding is becoming increasingly difficult to secure. This has driven resourceful and adaptive not-for-profits to develop dynamic partnerships with corporations to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. Are there other ways that WA can urgently address the escalating issue of individuals and families living in poverty?
