Shaping WA: Diversifying the economy

WA
Aug 18
As the mining economy slows, CEDA welcomes a panel of distinguished Western Australian leaders representing five of the next potential 'boom' industries to discuss the opportunity for WA to diversify its economy and establish itself as a world-leading destination for business investment, trade, tourism and innovation.

Speakers

Stephanie Buckland, Chief Executive Officer, Tourism Western Australia
Suzanne Daubney, Managing Director, Bannister Downs Dairy
Des Gillen, Managing Director, Kwinana Refinery, BP Australia
Professor Paul Johnson, Vice-Chancellor, The University of Western Australia

Event overview

The mining boom saw WA’s population grow by over 18 per cent from 2.17 million in 2008 to 2.57 million in 2014, and the influx of revenue saw WA start to transform into a vibrant and cultural destination. However, with the mining sector now transitioning, other industries must step up to secure WA’s long-term sustainability and prosperity.

The five sectors that have been identified as having the potential to be as big as mining are gas, agribusiness, international education, wealth management and tourism.

At this event we ask:

  • It is possible for these five industries to fill the gap left by the mining boom?
  • What is a realistic goal for each of these industries in the next 10-20 years?
  • What is required to achieve this vision?
