Meet the speakers

Michael Blythe
Chief Economist and Managing Director, Economics, Commonwealth Bank of Australia

Michael identifies trends in the Australian economy and leads research, economic analysis and forecasting at Australia’s largest bank. He has worked as Senior Economist at the Reserve Bank of Australia and long contributed the Economic overview to CEDA’s annual EPO report.

Professor Simon Jackman
Chief Executive Officer, United States Studies Centre

Simon directed work on the world’s longest running survey of political behaviour and attitudes, American National Election Studies, during the 2012 and 2016 United States Presidential elections. Simon is a dual citizen of Australia and the United States and political scientist whose work at Stanford focussed on public opinion, political participation and campaigns in the United States and Australia.

Peter Van Onselen
Journalist and Professor of Politics and Policy, Griffith Business School

Peter is a contributing editor at The Australian and an ABC presenter appearing regularly on The Drum, Q&A and Radio National. He has authored and edited six books, has a PhD in political science and a Masters of Commerce.

Peter Varghese AO
Chancellor, The University of Queensland

Peter Varghese authored Australia’s India Economic Strategy to 2035 and led work on Australia’s first white paper on foreign and trade policy.  He has served as Senior Adviser (International) to the Prime Minister, as High Commissioner to India and Malaysia and Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Melinda Cilento
Chief Executive, CEDA

Melinda Cilento is an economist, experienced executive and company director. She has served as a Commissioner with the Productivity Commission, in senior roles in Federal Treasury and as Chief Economist and Deputy CEO at the Business Council of Australia.
