On 3 October, Infrastructure NSW released its 20 year strategy at a CEDA event in Sydney, which includes more 70 recommendations for the next 20 years that will add $50 billion and create 100,000 jobs for the State.

Key recommendations for 2012-2017 include:

  • Duplicating the M5 East and extending the M4 from Strathfield to Taverner's Hill near Petersham. Once complete, this will be known as WestConnex;
  • Regenerate Parramatta Road and improve public transport;
  • Fixing road bottlenecks around Port Botany, the airport and Parramatta;
  • Proving flood mitigation in the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley;
  • Connecting the M2 to the F3 for faster travel and freight;
  • A light rail from Central to Moore Park and Univeristy of NSW;
  • Preserving corridors and sites for road and rail freight, and a second airport;
  • Road and bridge upgrades to support primary producers getting goods to market; and
  • Improving water quality in regional towns.

Key recommendations for 2017-2022 include:

  • Building an underground rapid bus transit to free up George St for pedestrians;
  • Making better use of all city circle stations to reduce congestion of Wynyard and Town Hall Stations;
  • Investing in Sydney's arts ribbon to support cultural life;
  • Improving existing rail services for central coast and Illawarra commuters (one hour trips from Gosford to Sydney and Wollongong to Sydney);
  • Extending the F3 to Raymond Terrace;
  • Upgrading water supply for the Hunter; and
  • Supporting growth in coal exports through the Newcastle Port by increasing rail track capacity through the Liverpool ranges.

Key recommendations 2022-2032 include:

  • Extending the f6 between the M5 and Waterfall;
  • Extending the eastern suburbs rail line to Maroubra if needed; and
  • Running even faster trains from Sydney (to Newcastle).

In its 20 year strategy, INSW also makes education and health recommendations to support a growing population.
