Women and sport: achieving the level playing field

“You have to start somewhere, and you have to take action,” Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley on tackling the pay gap in women’s sports.

CEDA hosted leading figures of Australia’s sporting sector, to unpack how equal opportunities for female sportspeople can be celebrated and achieved.

Live from Marvel Stadium, the panel included, Rebecca McCloy, Commercial Director Sport, Foxtel Group; Alexandra Saundry, Managing Director, More Than Management; Sarah Styles, Director, Office of Women in Sport and Recreation, Victorian Government and Craig Tiley, CEO, Tennis Australia.

The panel also discussed the upcoming FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 and the opportunity to grow local women's football within Australia.

“We’re just about to have the biggest women’s sporting event in the world ever, here in this country. What a fantastic opportunity…So much of what was said is what I hear every day about building [gender] inclusive workplaces,” said Melinda Cilento, Chief Executive, CEDA.

“For Australia’s sport and entertainment, we need to make sure that we harness and capture as many hearts of the Australian nation,” not just overseas, said Alexandra Saundry, Managing Director, More Than Management, who noted that “women want to help grow a legacy in the football space here as well.”

The event was also facilitated by Dr Katie Rowe, Associate Professor, Sport Management, Deakin University.
