Superannuation at what cost?

In 1981, about a decade before superannuation became compulsory in Australia, CEDA released an information paper titled Superannuation – at what cost?

In Superannuation - at what cost? the objective of superannuation was generally seen as being to provide for the financial needs of members once they stopped working, although there were concerns about generous taxation concessions incentivising savings for tax minimisation purposes rather than retirement.

The paper concluded that the future of superannuation schemes would depend on government superannuation taxation policy, foreseeing a move towards removing some of the concessions that existed then in order to promote greater coverage.
